Great article, as a Brit trying to get a grip on this, I found the reference to the forming of a new Democratic ideal at the start of the civil war, in particular to be helpful, as I had felt there was a connection with the South, that is maybe no longer so self evident.

Not a worthless article but, lets clear some words. Progressive means that government persons control your thoughts and actions to an ever greater degree. Conservative, refers to the great individual freedoms demanded in the Law of the US Constitution. Here the Individual citizens legally own the government. The only place this exists on earth. Progressive is simply another cover word for Communism. Many others like 'community organizer' refer to professionally trained communists like the present, 'leader of the free world.' Referring to the owners of this country as 'folks' is pathetically Leninist, it means 'sheeple' and gratuitously saying, 'moving forward' is tiresome as it refers to moving away from the freedom and actual written rule of law that is the bedrock of a free society.

Not all Democrats are "against capital punishment in any form." Many Democrats are for capital punishment and many Republicans are against it.
