And while we have a "freedom of religion", that also means we have the freedom and right not to practice organized religion or have that religion as the basis or policies and politics...you can't have it both ways. For the record, I'm Assembly of God, but I don't give sermons on political message boards or force my religious opinion on others. But while I say that, I think abortion is unconstitutional, and is in and of itself murder. There are two instances that fall into the gray matter of the debate (rape and if the mother will likely die giving birth...if I had the right to choose between my wife and my child, I would choose my wife 200%

@ JasonMcCurry : I really don't like that example. Are you really a believer of GOD? I know that this is off subject, but choosing your wife over your child is just as bad as choosing your child over your wife. If it were me, I would not have chosen either, but had faith in GOD that both would be delivered. It's this sort of thinking that has made or society into what it is today. If there is a person who chooses one choice, there will always be someone who apposes that choice. That's how the Republican and Democratic parties were started. And that's also where, the untold third party, the Independent party has started to rise up over the years. By the way: I'm only a 19 year old college freshman student. I wouldn't want to sound rude to an older adult, so please don't take my response as disrespectful.

@ Steve : Wow way to take an unbiased article and make a mockery of it with your completely biased views. This article wasn't meant to take shots at either side. It was meant to give a simplistic idea of each political party in order to give confused people a general idea of what each party stands for. Anyone here trying to figure out which party they might side with should just ignore this guy. That being said you don't have to side with either parties when voting unless you are have no mind for yourself or you are a politician. The only real problem with the "two" party system is the people who opt for the "republican vote" or "democratic vote" whereas you agree to vote the same as everyone who identifies with the respective party. Its basically saying "I don't have time or don't care to offer my real opinion so I'll just say what they say so my political party wins." I personally don't completely side with any parties as my views are my own and differ from any general party.

@ Carmen : Neither of you are right and both of those comments show ignorance to the respective issues of being both conservative and progressive. Conservative merely implies that a person or idea tends to try and not change too much while progressive means the person or idea tends to change laws and or policies more. The word redneck being tossed around so loosely is quite hypocritical to what I assume your underlying views are on equal and fair human rights are. There is nothing "redneck" about wanting the security of owning a gun. When will people realize that no matter what the laws are criminals will still have guns. They have ways to obtain them unlawfully hence them being criminals. So lets assume I am a criminal. I have to towns I can choose from to attack. In one town gun ownership is banned and in the other it isn't. Let's see which one would be more advantageous for me to attack? The one where the people on the other side of the door have guns to shoot me or the one where they will be defenseless? That being said gun ownership comes with responsibilities. You have to register your gun which means you have to have a license to hold a gun which means you have to have training and safety lessons. This all means that first of all gun owners will know how to properly use the gun when needed but also will know how to safely maintain and store the gun. By the way, I am not a republican nor am I a "redneck".

@ Eric : Don't forget McCain winning the popular vote but Obama winning the electoral college. For those of you who don't know, the "popular vote" is the actual general population votes tallied while the "electoral college" vote is a bunch of (government) groups who vote "as a group" and submit their votes depending on what the majority of the group voted. Sounds like a heaping load of... well come to your own conclusion of this voting system.

I agree with you on separating Church and State to the effect of exactly what it says. Issues that are/should be considered a "Church" matter have no place in the written laws of government. Both abortion and same sex marriage are "church" matters and have no place being a written law whether for or against. Furthermore I believe you should have a deeper look into your faith in God. In any matter of life and death a true believer in God would leave it to him and his plan for the greater good. How can you make that selfish decision to choose your wife over an innocent child's life? What if that child was meant to be the second coming or the next leader of this great nation or the one to finally bring peace and unity to this broken world of ours? Nothing is as simple as black and white.

@ Steve : @ Steve I would just say that " progressive doesn't necessarily mean that "government persons control your thoughts and actions". And bear in mind that I'm a conservative. I think we damage our arguments when we resort to vast generalizations concerning what liberal or conservative means. In my never to be humble opinion, it is at least unnecessary, and at worst counterproductive to give in to the natural impulse to demonize those that think differently. And to emphasize that, the constitution gives us the right to be wrong. This is the battlefield of "ideas". And in my never to be humble opinion, we are better when we we just stick to the facts, as opposed to "what we think". Having said that, I enjoyed your post.
