What is Feng Shui? While this may seem like a simple question, it can actually be a difficult one to answer. Feng (meaning wind) Shui (meaning water) is an ancient science and art developed in China more than 3,000 years ago. It is a complex body of knowledge that shows you how to balance energies of a given space to assure yourself good fortune and health. In Chinese culture, water and wind are linked to good health. Therefore, good feng shui means good fortune while bad feng shui means misfortune or bad luck.

Number

Why It Is Lucky

8

This number is considered to be a lucky one because 8 sounds like the Chinese word that means prosperity. In many feng shui symbols and applications, you will find things grouped in 8 like lucky bamboo plant stalks, wind chime chimes or coins. The infinity knot is also considered to be auspicious since it has a figure eight. This is why you will find infinity knots in feng shui objects, symbols and emblems, which are used to decorate. Feng Shui adherents tend to look for homes with the number 8 in them.

9

This is also a lucky number in feng shui because its pronunciation is similar to the Cantonese or Chinese word that means sufficient. There is a cultural belief that number 9 has the power to imbue an abundance of anything you need, like from home, food, career success, health to money. It is also synonymous with enjoying and having long life.

2

This is also a lucky feng shui number because it is believed that wherever there is a pair of objects like people, food, plants and animals, good fortune will surely follow. This is a belief that has deep roots in various Chinese traditions. So, whenever you assign objects or paintings to a master bedroom, make sure that you use them in pairs. For example, a pair of duck paintings, a pair of fish sculptures, etc.

Inauspicious Feng Shui Number

The number 4 in feng shui is considered inauspicious because it has a pronunciation similar to “death” in Chinese or Cantonese language. This is the reason why traditional feng shui circles consider the number 4 unlucky. After all, if the number sounded like death in English, people would also avoid it. Although this is an inauspicious number, there is a cure. The feng shui cure is encircling the number 4 in the color red.
