Peeing Blood After Sex, What Does It Mean?

Irregular Menstrual Cycles

If you have irregular menstrual cycles, it could be the explanation to why you are bleeding after sex. Irregular menses may coincide with the sexual intercourse. 

In this case, it is advisable to study your menstrual cycles and determine the days you are most likely to experience menses. If it is menses that is causing the bleeding, lower abdominal pain during the first few days may be the only symptom you experience.

Abrasions and Injuries

Rough sex can result in lacerations or injuries in the vaginal tract, especially when the tract is dry. This may also lead to bleeding while urinating after sex. If you suspect this to be the problem, wash the vagina with a povidone or alcohol-based antiseptic immediately, which can help to prevent infection. Also, strict hygiene should be exercised. In addition to dehydration, low estrogen levels in the body may also lead to these injuries. As such, ladies who are approaching menopause should consider using lubricants while having sex.

A Misplaced IUD

For ladies using IUD, peeing blood after sex may be an indicator that the IUD has dislocated from the uterus to the lower parts of the vaginal tract. See a doctor immediately to have it diagnosed and have the IUD placed in the proper position. Before that, use alternative contraceptive options.

Infection

Irritation of the vaginal tract by an infection can also result in blood in urine after intercourse in ladies. This may be a result of a sexually transmitted infection, such as Chlamydia and gonorrhea, or just a yeast infection of the vaginal tract.

In addition to causing excruciating pain, kidney and bladder stones can also cause mild to gross bleeding after sex in ladies. These stones are formed when the minerals in urine precipitate out. Inherited Disorders

Some of the inherited disorders, such as Alport syndrome and sickle cell anemia, may also cause peeing blood after sex. While sickle cell anemia affects hemoglobin within the red blood cells, Alport syndrome affects the filtering membranes of the glomeruli within the kidneys. Both of these conditions can lead to microscopic or noticeable bleeding after sexual intercourse.

Cancer

Blood stains in the urine after having sex could also be an indicator of advanced prostate, bladder or kidney cancer. These forms of cancer are curable during their early stages. However, during early stages, such cancers have no symptoms unless the patient is screened for cancer.

Abstain From Sex

After discovering that you are experiencing any form of bleeding from the vagina, you should abstain from sexual intercourse for some time and seek medical attention. This will allow you to monitor the characteristics of the bleeding, including whether it only happens after sex, its frequency, consistency and amount, and be in a better position to control it. This will also prevent you from spreading an underlying infection to your partner. If the bleeding is profuse, you should exercise vaginal packing by applying mild pressure to stop the bleeding and then see a doctor immediately.

Try OTC Medicines

If the bleeding is accompanied by pain, you may use pain killers, such as diclofenac or aspirin, to relieve the pain. Before using any over-the-counter antibiotics, it is advisable to consult a qualified medical practitioner as some of such antibiotics can aggravate fungal infection if the underlying condition is a fungal infection. Even after the doctor has cleared the antibiotics safe, you should still watch out for any form of discharge from the vagina, pain or continuous bleeding. If such symptoms manifest, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Keep Good Hygiene

Additionally, you should exercise strict hygiene as any injury in the vaginal tract can easily lead to an infection. For instance, you should consider washing the vagina after visiting the toilet to prevent such infections as gonorrheal and other bacterial infections. Additionally, ladies should avoid any hygiene product that irritates their genitals.

Make Some Lifestyle Changes

Drinking a lot of fluids and urinating when you feel the urge can minimize the risk of contracting urinary tract infections. Also, you can limit the chances of developing kidney stones by drinking a lot of fluids and reducing the intake of proteins, salt and oxalate-containing foods, like rhubarb and spinach.

Minimize your exposure to toxic chemicals and quit smoking. These coupled with eating a healthy diet and maintaining healthy weight can minimize the chances of contracting cancer.
