How to Smoke a Cigarette

1

Lighting the cigarette

After you have placed the cigarette between your lips, you'll want to light a match or lighter to light the tip of the cigarette. As you bring the fire to the tip of the cigarette, you will want to suck in as if you were sucking on a straw. Take a few short pulls of the cigarette without inhaling the smoke until it is light.

2

Inhaling

Once the cigarette is light, you will want to inhale a small amount of the smoke. If you bring in too much smoke, you will instantly begin to cough and can even feel ill. So when you are first starting out smoking, you want to limit the amount of smoke you inhale each time until you have become more use to the sensation.

3

Hold the inhale for a few seconds

After you have inhaled the smoke, you want to hold it in your mouth for a few seconds. Holding the smoke in your mouth allows it to cool slightly which will irritate your throat less through the process. This also changes the taste of the smoke, which will most likely determine how well of an experience you will have when smoking cigarettes.

4

Take the cigarette out of your mouth

When removing the cigarette from your mouth, take a deep breath and inhale the smoke to your lungs. How to smoke a cigarette when inhaling the smoke can be done in a few different ways and there are a few tips to remember.

  • Smoking a cigarette is not the same as smoking a joint.

  • You can try the French method of inhaling the smoke where you push some of the smoke back out and suck it up through your nose. This method of smoking will take some practice.

  • The more you smoke, the more of a tolerance you will build to inhale more smoke over time. As you are able to inhale more smoke, you ultimately inhale more nicotine, and this is how the addiction to nicotine begins. Over time you just need to keep smoking more and more to get the same feeling you did when you first started smoking.

5

Hand position

After you have removed the cigarette from your mouth, you may be wondering what to do with your hand. While there is no right or wrong way to hold your cigarette, there are a few things to be aware of depending on your gender.

  • If you are a woman, it is typical to rotate the arm from the shoulder. This keeps the cigarette around mouth level and to one side. Keep the palm up with the hand facing outward.

  • If you are a man, you will want to rotate at the elbow. Men tend to lower their hand to the torso and will keep their palm facing inward.

6

Exhale the smoke

You can exhale the smoke either through your mouth or nose. This is done as you are moving your hand into the right position. Some tips to remember for how to smoke a cigarette while exhaling include:

  • Exhaling through the nose can cause a burning sensation but can also draw out more flavor from the smoke.

  • Instead of exhaling all at once, you can slowly exhale or allow the smoke to dribble out of the mouth.

  • Over time you can begin to practice blowing smoke rings. This is done by form an “O” shape with the mouth as you exhale the smoke. You utilize the throat to push smoke over the tongue and out the mouth to create smoke rings in the air.

7

Tap the ash

Flicking the ashes off the cigarette is another vital part of smoking. As the cigarette burns, the ashes build on the tip of the cigarette. While the gray ash can remain for a long time, it will eventually succumb to gravity and fall to the ground. Most often this may not be a problem - just let it go and fall on its own, but this can be a problem when you are indoors. You'll want to know how to properly flick the ashes from your cigarette when you need to dispose of them in an ashtray.

  • How you hold the cigarette can determine how you will want to flick the ashes.

  • You can use your thumb to gently flick the filter of the cigarette so that the ashes neatly fall into the ashtray.

  • If you have the cigarette held between the thumb and forefinger, then you can tap the cigarette using your index finger or ring finger.

  • You can also just tap the cigarette against the top of the ashtray, so the ashes call into the tray section.

Put out the cigarettes

After learning how to smoke a cigarette, you also need to know how to dispose of it once you have finished smoking it. You want to make sure you have cigarette completely and safely put out by grinding it until no more smoke is visible. Make sure you only try putting the cigarette out on non-flammable surfaces and that it is disposed of in an ashtray. You don't want to leave your cigarette buds littered around for someone else to clean up. Refrain also from flicking your cigarette out of a moving vehicle, which is often very dangerous and is one of the leading causes of brush and forest fires.

You don't want to smoke the filter but how much of the cigarette you actually smoke is up to you. Most will smoke before the filter begins to burn or until it begins to burn their lips. Some also tend to only smoke a little more than half the cigarette, so the smoke is clean and cooler.
