Known as the Scotland of India, Kodagu is a wonderful hill station which is found in southern Karnataka. The district of Kodagu has a distinct culture, unique traditions and customs. The area includes lush green valleys, misty hills, evergreen forests, and breath taking water falls which are surrounded by orange groves, coffee plantations, pepper plants, cardamom and dense forests.

As one of the top tourist destinations in Karnataka, homestay in Coorg are quite plentiful and are spread all over the region. A lot of them are part of a working plantation and they serve traditional Coorgi food, giving their guests a unique does of local culture. Honey Valley Estate

This is a home-stay which is located near to the highest peak of Kodagu, Thadiyandamole. Spice and coffee plantations surround the Honey Valley Estate. Lovers of the outdoors and naturalists can take their pick from spice plantation tours, trekking, bird watching and nature walks. Plus, the picnic area of Talacauvery is close by.

Accommodations here include a choice of stay in the Tranquil, which has three double rooms with bathrooms attached and a ten bed dormitory with common bathroom facilities. If you are not staying long, there is a thatched hut in the valley and the Coffee plantation.

Misty Woods

A farm resort located in Virajpet, Coorg, Misty Woods has Kerala style cottages which are built with wood and clay bricks and set on a 100 acre plantation. They offer activities such as plantation tours, forest trekking and a trek up to the peak of Thadiyande Mol. November through March is their peak season. Misty wood is a village of cottages which are independent of each other. In the restaurant there is a television, but not in the rooms. Multi-cuisine food is served at the thatched restaurant, and in the evenings campfires are lit.

Bethel Home Stay

A wonderfully transformed ancestral property with a convenient location in town, Gowri Nivas is walking distance away from Raja’s seat, one of the most popular attractions of the area. The aim of owners is to give you a luxurious stay at a price that is affordable. There are four rooms which are uniquely decorated, two being in the main house and two cottage rooms. For a much more private and quieter stay, you can choose the cottage rooms, which also have porches you can sit on. Families with kids might, however, prefer the attic room in the house.

Kedakal Estate

Average price: For two people 4,000 rupees per night, includes breakfast

Address: Just off the Mysore-Madikeri Highway, about 10km east of Madikeri

Located in the same area as Vindhyas, Kedakal Estate has a feature which sets it apart from most of the homestays, which is a Jacuzzi and in-ground swimming pool. There are three guests’ rooms in the host’s renovated four bedroom colonial bungalow, and it was built in the early 1900s among the coffee plantation of the estate. The hosts also have an evergreen forest, pristine with a river not far away which you can take a day trip to visit. For anyone who loves adventure, quad bike riding is an additional activity available.

Coorg Coffee Hills

Average price: Per night and per person 750 rupees. This includes coffee, breakfast, an evening campfire and plantation and river walk.

For anyone on a budget who still wants a comfortable stay that is fairly close to town, you can try the brightly colored Coorg Coffee Hills. There are three in a cluster with one, two and three bedrooms. There is a separate entrance to each room, 24-hour hot water and electricity as well. There is a music system provided and the cottages are surrounded by a lot of greenery with views of the estate at the front and back and mountains on the side.

Palace Estate

Average price: Per night for a single, 500 rupees, and up to 2,500 rupees for a double. All tea/coffee and meals are extra.

Address: Kakkable, about thirty-five kilometers southwest from Madikeri

To get away from worldly distractions, try the Palace Estate. The homestay in Coorg is sitting atop a mountain at the foot of Coorg’s highest peak, Thadiyandamol, and overlooks forest which is untouched and the Nalnad Palace of the 17th century. There is a private but small waterfall on the twenty acre plantation, and all kinds of bird watching and trekking opportunities. The biggest drawback is the isolated location, meaning there are not many options for dining away from the homestay, and the food is pricier. The rooms are furnished basically with just a bed, attached bathroom and table. Hot water is available at dusk and dawn only.
