Not everyone needs vitamins artificially added to the diet, but only a few of us eat a daily selection of food so perfectly balanced that our body wants no more vitamin supplements.

Why to take vitamin tablets

While it is a good idea to get as many of the vitamins and minerals as possible through fresh meat, fruit and vegetables, we cannot always be sure how fresh they are and we should not turn our back on companies who know how to utilize nature's goodies by packaging them into vitamin tablets.

Unlike fresh foods, vitamin tablets last for more than two or three days and are comparatively inexpensive when compared to the real thing.

Our natural store of vitamins is depleted very easily. A bout of stress, an excess of alcohol, illness, lack of food or fatigue will all tax the body's ability to maintain a perfect level of health.

If you understand just where you may be missing out on vitamins, a course of vitamin tablets can provide the essential ingredients you need. What's more, they can be delicious to take. The effervescent tablets all have a tangy flavour.

How vitamins affect you basically

  • Vitamin A fights minor infections but, more importantly, it is needed for digestion, eyesight and fertility.

  • The vitamin B group is the largest and split into B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B6 (niacin), and B12 and are all essential to body growth. If you are lacking any of them, you'll probably experience fatigue, loss of appetite or listlessness. If you take a course of antibiotics, a vitamin B supplement is an excellent body builder to follow. If you take the Pill, you may also require added vitamin B.

  • Vitamin C is taken by many people as a guard against winter chills. It also helps to maintain good teeth and bones. Because vitamin C cannot be stored in the body, you need to take it daily, either as a vitamin supplement or in citrus fruits, tomatoes, cabbage or cauliflower. New research shows that smoking may also deplete vitamin C.

  • Vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin. It's absorbed from the sun by the body to calm nerves and also helps absorb calcium.

  • While vitamin E has attracted claims that range from increasing sexual libido to healing cuts and wounds, one thing we do know is that it is essential for good skin and shining hair. We also know that it is eroded by a diet high in polyunsaturated fats.

If you feel you might need a vitamin supplement but don't know whom to ask, your doctor is the person who understands your health best and knows which vitamin and how much to take.

“Is there any difference between synthetic and natural vitamins?" seems to be the most asked question. According to UCSB ScienceLine, the body cannot tell the difference.
