A "master mason" is a 3rd degree in the traditional blue lodge when you get to that level you can then branch off to the scottish rite and there are 32 degrees. The highest one can actually study and become is a 32nd degree mason or The Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret. The 33rd degree can not be studied for it is a degree that is awarded for exemplary service.

This is actually a misnomer. The highest degree in Freemasonry is 3rd degree (Master Mason). The two degrees before it are 2nd degree (Fellow Craft) and 1st degree (Entered Apprentice). These three comprise the "Blue Lodge" degrees, the core of Freemasonry. There are other appendent bodies of Freemasonry, the two largest and most well-established being the Scottish Rite, and the York Rite. York Confers ten additional degrees, which teach moral lessons through short plays observed by the candidate. Scottish Rite confers degrees 4-32 in the same format. However, these are supplemental, and a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason is not "higher up" in the Order than a 3rd degree Master Mason. Despite whether or not a Brother had partaken in additional degree work, he is still first and foremost a Master Mason. The 33 degree is awarded, not applied for, and is used to highlight and acknowledge the magnitude of good some Scottish Rite Brothers have done for their country or the world. While 33rd degree Masons are respected and admired for their contributions to Masonry and their communities, they still aren't "higher" than a Master Mason. In fact, you must be a Master Mason to join any of the appendent bodies of Freemasonry.
